Members of InterAction, the largest alliance of U.S.-based nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) working internationally, are responding to the devastation caused in the Philippines by Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda, one of the most powerful typhoons ever recorded. A list of reputable and experienced organizations responding to the crisis so far is available at www.InterAction.org.

In the wake of “Super Typhoon” Haiyan slamming into the Philippines, many relief organizations across the world are donating their time and resources to help those affected.

As the public’s attention and hearts are focused on the devastation caused by Typhoon Haiyan, BBB Wise Giving Alliance advises donors to take steps to avoid being taken by questionable solicitors or wasting their money on poorly managed relief efforts.

The other day we received a heifer international catalog. pretty much every year we buy something in the names of some of our family members during the holidays — those people who have everything and appreciate the gesture of giving to others less fortunate.

In his seminar lecture from 7-8p.m., Pierre Ferrari, CEO of philanthropic and international development organization Heifer International, will discuss Heifer’s initiatives and the collaborations that allow the organization to continue its fight against global hunger and poverty.

Over the holidays, we become more aware of some of the material needs around us that often go unmet during other times of the year. In part, the weather turning cold makes us think about people experiencing homelessness or those too poor to afford heating or winter coats. In part, the gifting culture of the holidays makes us think of people who, for various reasons, won’t receive physical gifts.

For the 20th straight year, Arcadia University is hosting the Empty Bowl Benefit Dinner, an event that addresses hunger and homelessness both locally and internationally. Since its inception, the event has generated more than $100,000.

Typhoon Haiyan, one of the strongest recorded storms in history, touched ground on Friday, devastating entire towns in the island nation, including the cities of Basey and Tacloban, where thousands are missing and officials say the death toll could reach 10,000. Beth Pearson always liked showering friends and family with holiday gifts. But about 15 years ago, it occurred to her that everyone she and her family knew already had everything they needed.

This year the Bob Marley Tribute Organization wanted to leave a larger imprint on the city of Little Rock and the State of Arkansas. As we continue to promote the message of peace and unity that Marley stood for, we also wanted to reach out and help others in a significant way. Therefore, we have selected Heifer International in Little Rock, Arkansas will be the non-profit of choice in which we will donate proceeds from the tribute to the organization.
