Miraculous as it may seem during a time when bottled water and soft drink are almost suffocating the country, an increase in milk drinking has been observed in Tanzania. Heifer International’s East Africa Dairy Development project is part of this change.
The Emmy Awards aren’t till Monday, Aug. 25, but the celebrations start early. Variety will be on hand inside the best parties around Hollywood as the stars mingle, nibble and toast to TV’s finest. Here’s our party report for Friday, Aug. 22:
One of Hollywood’s newest (and cutest) couples kicked off Emmys weekend by attending Heifer International’s 3rd annual Beyond Hunger Gala Friday night at the Montage Hotel.
Actress Diane Lane got involved with Heifer Intl. six years ago, shortly after she and her daughter, Eleanor Lambert, attended a party for the charity at Mary Steenburgen and Ted Danson’s house. Other guests included wandering chicks, goats and a llama. “I was enchanted, and my daughter was impressed,” says Lane, who will be honored for her work with the org Aug. 22 at Heifer’s third annual Beyond Hunger: A Place at the Table gala at the Montage Beverly Hills.
Back in 2008, when actress Diane Lane brought her daughter, Eleanor (then 14) to Rwanda with Heifer International it was strictly as a mom not a movie star. “Sometimes I have a gift of flipping a switch and just disappearing into a crowd,” says Lane, 49. “It’s also a blessing because I was the only mom who brought her daughter and that’s more how I was known.”
Fresh, local produce isn’t always the easiest to come by, but Heifer International and Foodshed Farms are working to change that through their now open 2014 fall CSA program.
Actress Ryan Newman of Nick at Nite’s “See Dad Run” recently visited Cambodia on behalf of Heifer International to help Heifer in their mission to end world hunger and poverty. Sales of the game exceeded all expectations. “I think we recouped our money within, like, ten minutes,” he says. In five months, Goat Simulator outsold both Sanctum games combined, such strong performance that the team wanted to give back and decided on offering free DLC, despite the fact Sanctum and its sequel made about half their revenues from paid DLC. And the team participated in the “Games for GoatS” program with charity Heifer International, offering free Steam keys for the game (along with Escape Goat 2, which also participated) to donors.
The research into VFTs has been based on their use in the East Africa Dairy Development (EADD) project, a collaboration launched in 2008 between Heifer International, the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF), Technoserve, the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), and African Breeders Services (ABS). The project’s first phase aimed to double the incomes of 179,000 dairy farmers in Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda.
