Poultry processor Cargill and charity Heifer International have joined forces to create a new initiative which aims to improve the nutrition and economic livelihoods of 100m people by 2030 through the production, promotion and consumption of poultry.
Heifer International, in partnership with Mastercard Foundation, is training youth in business and social skills as part of the East Africa Youth Inclusion Program. The project will equip 25,000 youth between the ages of 15 and 24 in Uganda and Tanzania with the skills they need to run agriculture-related businesses.
Heifer International stress the importance of health for animals as a means to human prosperity, but investments in animal health still tend to languish as a subcategory of agriculture development, which received only 4.5 percent of aid flows in 2016.
Heifer International’s goal is to make every family sustainably self-reliant by giving them the tools to produce food and a reliable income. The organization believes that a sustainable income will bring new opportunities for funding small businesses, building schools, and creating agricultural cooperatives.
